Restricted Growth conditions may share some or all of the following characteristics: -
- People of restricted growth may have an increased curvature of the lower spine (lumber lordosis) with exceptionally loose/flexible joints. Hip and knee joints are very loose and limited mobility.
- Bowing of the legs may be present.
- Spinal stenosis is often present. This compresses the spinal cord and nerve roots causing pain and numbness in the hips, knees and legs. This is aggravated by everyday activities such a walking. This limits mobility.
- The head maybe top heavy in relation to their body. This can affect balance. Should they fall, they cannot reach out to save themselves, as their arms cannot be fully extended due to the shape of the elbow joint. As limbs are short, the first point of contact with the ground is often the head, which can result in serious injury.
- Carrying heavy objects (even shopping) should be avoided because of the strain that can be placed on joints and the spine.
- Sleep apnoea, This is a very serious breathing condition that is stressful and results in excessive tiredness. In severe cases it can be fatal.
- Osteo-arthritis (degenerative) of the joints particularly the hips and knees. People with some of the very rare forms of restricted growth such as MED will have multiple joint problems which can involve the normal affected joints such as the hips and knees along with the shoulder, elbow, wrist and ankle causing severe mobility problems. With some conditions there is an inability to fully straighten joints such as the elbow. There may also be distortion of the lower legs and knock-knees.
- Scoliosis- a sideways curvature of the spine, Kyphosis- where the upper spine curves outward or a combination of the two Kyphoscoliosis may be present.
- Those undergoing surgery may experience problems with anaesthetics. A non-muscle relaxing anaesthetic or epidural may be required.
- Young children may have hearing difficulties that may affect the development of speech.
- Hydrocephalus and related problems may be present.
As these are very rare and complex conditions, knowledge by many GPs and Hospital Consultants is limited. Medical personnel often seek information about these rare conditions from the Office.
