Facts & Figures

How many people are there of restricted growth?

It is estimated that there are approximately 6,000 people who have a restricted growth condition. There are over 100 medical conditions that cause short stature. The most common type of restricted growth amongst RGA members is 'achondroplasia' which causes sever shortening of the limbs. It affects 1 in 25,000 births per year and there are 25-30 babies born per year with a restricted growth condition. Approximately 75% of individuals with a restricted growth condition are born to parents of average size.

None of the conditions are common, but they all have a similar effect on the day to day lives of people who are affected.

The Restricted Growth Association, as it is now was formerly known as the Association for Research into Restricted Growth, and it was set up in 1970 as a self-help organisation concerned with all aspects of the well being of people of restricted growth, and to represent their interests nationally.
